Dh and I had a wonderful day yesterday at the Ayr Flower Show, this is one of the more important shows in Scotland. The Begonia Society has a huge entry and the blooms were outstanding. There were lots of classes and the entries were of a very high calibre. In spite of the recent very wet weather many were perfect although it was interesting this year there were very few entries among the Sweet Pea classes. I am not sure if Sweet Peas are out of fashion just now or if this has just been a bad year for some although ours are doing well-------not nearly up to show standards though. I have been doing an experiment in that I have been removing the tendrils in one lot and leaving the rest to grow rampant and I do think that the removal of the tendrils does seem to give better blooms and longer stems.
There were lots of other exhibits and plant stalls from companies from all over the UK, and so we came home bearing purchases, I love Heuchera and bought such a pretty one called "Georgia Peach", the name says it all in the colour of the leaves.
In the Rural Crafts and Flower Arrangement Tent lots of wonderful baking, embroidery, photographs, paintings, knitting etc.----------only one patchwork-----a box with folded patchwork on the lid! This I do not understand as there is a thriving and very good P&Q group in Ayr. Blackwork seems very popular in the area!
The flower arrangement classes were as usual wonderful, it is fascinating to read the judges comments. I have tried to imbed a photo here but it will not imbed itself in the correct place---gr-r-r-r!!
This morning the rain has started again----thnk goodness yesterday was a glorious day-----so I am working on a cot quilt and am quilting around the flying geese in the borders. I have used Beatrix Potter fabric in the body----------saw the lovely film on TV the other night "Miss Potter" she was a real fiesty lady! Will post a photo when the quilt is finished, it is a very simple one.
